His "gift" was that we were able to be on the field for Indians batting practice at last nights game and he was going to get to meet his hero, Jack Hannahan (3rd base).
At first all he said was "cool". Then it hit him and he kept saying "I'm the luckiest kid in the world". And then he got really nervous. He planned out exactly what he was going to say all day yesterday. I'm so glad that we told him before hand and didn't leave it as a total surprise. I think he would have been in shock and not said anything.
For the last two little league seasons, the Little Man has requested jersey #9. It's not too difficult to get it since Dad is the coach. We have no idea why he's identified with Jack, but now his favorite position is 3rd base (and catcher). He also has said that he likes Jack because he's a practicing Catholic just like the Little Man. But that is actually a new revelation because of this article that we read earlier this year.
But whatever the reason, he's taken Jack as his hero and I'm OK with that.
On the field during batting practice. It was so hot down there!
He was on cloud 9 all night and still is this morning. I think his 8th birthday will be one he'll never forget.

Oh wow -- that's sounds like the coolest surprise ever! It does sound like it was a good idea to tell him ahead of time and let him get adjusted to the idea and think about what to say.
