1 mom, 1 dad, and 2 beautiful boys. The story of our life as a family and the day to day trials of keeping our youngest son safe with multiple food allergies.
Well, that stunk. :o( I have a niece with severe tree nut allergies and her brother has severe peanut allergies. We do nothing but read labels when they are coming to visit and even then I question their mom to make sure the items are safe. You just don't want to take any chances.
I have a student this year with a major allergy to lactose. He's not merely lactose intolerant, he can have an anaphylactic reaction. I didn't realize this, and didn't think to question the punch the children were having at their Christmas party...
Yeah, we ALL learned from that one. He was fine with a dose of Benedryl, and his mom was there (thank goodness), but it was still eye opening.
I hope your son (and you and your husband) are fully recovered now.
There's no right answer on how to recover. Count your blessings. He is alright. Then, move on. If you want, apologize to him for not reading the label. I have had to apologize to my son. I was going to let him have something on good faith (because it came from a friend) but he questioned my reasoning without looking at the label. He was right and following what we have taught him. I apologized. I think it's important to be honest about mistakes (especially with your child) so you can both learn from them.
I really feel for you. It's so easy to make these mistakes when you live with multiple food allergy all the time. I think when you get a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel, it's exciting.
We've had something similar recently but its because the company making his rice milk, now make it on a soy line - so major cross contamination.
So sorry! I'm glad he's OK. Grandson Sam just had skin tests on his big allergens-egg and peanut-and the reaction was worse than ever. Now they have the epi-pen at school and home. They keep saying he'll grow out of his egg allergy but that isn't happening as of yet.
Janeen, I just read your post on WEGO. I used to be able to eat the Lay's Kettle Cooked plain chips because they weren't cooked in corn oil. Now they've changed and corn oil is on the label. I e-mailed them and this is what they said, "Martha, the corn oil we use too cook our chips has gone through a heated cleaning process that removes the protein residues. When an individual has an allergy, they are allergic to the protein in the offending food. With the protein removed, most corn allergic people can eat snacks made with this oil.
We also make Lay's Natural Thick Cut potato chips cooked in expeller pressed sunflower oil. You'll find this in the natural food section of most grocery stores.
We consider you a valued consumer and hope you will continue to enjoy snacks from Frito-Lay."
The jury is out on the heated cleaning process and I KNOW I react to corn oil cooked products. Don't trust big business!

Did he at least enjoy it before the reaction?
