The first day of first grade
My baby went on the bus. I got teary! He wouldn't hug me. He said "I'm too big, Mom"! He has to do a bus transfer and it makes me nervous. We've been over the bus number he has to get on a hundred times, so I hope he remembers it. I'd follow the bus to make sure he gets there safely, but did you know it's illegal to follow a school bus (at least in Ohio anyway)? I didn't know that. You could get arrested for that. So I'll just have faith that he makes it there OK. The bus driver knows he needs to transfer so I hope she points him in the right direction. As soon as he got on I heard a few kids call out his name (he knows them from preschool) so at least he knows somebody.
And guess who drew the short straw and has to work in the lunchroom today? Yep, that's right. How did I get picked for lunch duty on the first day of school? Doesn't quite seem fair.
Here are some pictures of our big morning:

In his uniform for the first time

With his little brother

Waiting for the bus

That is one heavy back pack. I had to cover 7 books last night with "clear contact paper". It took me 2.5 hours and they look awful. I'm contact paper challenged.

My big boy getting on the bus. Where did my baby go?
***edited to add: My school bus/law information is second hand that I got from another nervous mother at Older Boys school: My understanding is that it's illegal because school bus drivers are required to report any suspicious activities (i.e. - someone following a bus - also known as stalking the bus). With child safety at the forefront the drivers would be the first line of defense if someone were following a specific child with the intent of abd*cting that child (and it did happen right down the street and the driver thwarted the abd*ction attempt). A nervous mother or a number of nervous mothers following the bus could keep the local police department quite busy fielding calls from upset bus drivers. At least this is what I was told.
And no I don't have to wear a hair net when I work in the lunch room :)

It's illegal to follow a school bus! That is so strange!
I am sure he'll end up at the right place.
Have fun at lunch. :-) Lunchroom duty was one offer of service I felt no guilt about declining. Though it would have been fun to see my kids at school then.
hey there lunchlady!! hahaha!
ohmigoodness the BUS!! awwwww!! That first line about him being too big is just priceless and heartbreaking! All at the same time!
I get all teary and weak when I see these little babies with backpacks on! The time is going by too fast!
ps. do you have to wear the hairnet?
He looks so big! I didn't know it was illegal to follow the bus.
I'll be weeping right along with you tomorrow, since it is Fiver's first day of all-day kindergarten. *SOB*
He won't be riding the bus this year, but it's not illegal to follow one in PA, so I always have that option open to me :)
I love uniforms on the first day of school. He looks so dapper in his, all grown up and ready to learn!
He looks so excited!
I see the school districts point, but seriously if someone pulls out of the driveway you just picked up a kid. . .I would think it would be okay.
I hope you survived lunch duty!
I can't believe he's already in first grade!!! I hope his day went well... you never know maybe he'll see one of his friends hugging their mom and he might just change his mind on the whole hugging thing!!! I keep my fingers crossed for you!!! Love the pictures!!! He looks so studious and cute of course!
They do grow up much too fast, don't they! I also remember that "I'm too big to hug you mom" statement! lol He looks so handsome for his first day of first grade and that backpack looks bigger than he is! I use to hate having to cover the books as well. Hope your first day of lunch duty went well:-) xoxo
He looks like such a big boy! I can't believe he felt he was too big/old for a hug from mom! His backpack sure does look heavy! I can't believe as a first grader he has to transfer buses! Geesh! Hope he has a great year!
So sweet!
I love the music you play on the blog, it always relaxes me XD
My oldest starts 4 yr old Kindergarten (basically preschool)on the 9th. She's riding the bus for the first time and I am scared! I am tempted to follow the bus.
Wow! What a big boy. He looks so proud and excited. How did he like the rest of his day? My girls will be "walkers" for elementary and middle school.
Funny law - how many Moms get arrested, do you think? ;)
I hope his first day was great!
